Our recently finished project – Escher house-2 has been nominated in the Mosman Design Awards 2017 – Heritage Conservation Category.
The renovation of this Federation – Queen Anne style house, c.1904, introduces consistency and improved spatial flow which had been lost over cumulative alterations and additions.
The works retain and restore the streetscape facades and the principle rooms of the existing house. The core is opened up with the contemporary insertion of a finely-detailed sculptural stairwell which, floats and twists in an Escher-esque way connecting attic through to garden.
Previous ad hoc additions are sympathetically replaced to rationalise the floor plan. A home office is added in the roof space taking advantage of views, and a meaningful connection is established between the children’s level and a new garden that is redesigned as a place for play.
The result is a home where the detailed interiors and cellular nature of the Federation period are respected and celebrated but the spaces now have consistency and fluid connections between levels, rooms and garden.

Here are a few under construction photos of an alterations and additions project in Clifton Gardens.
The house is surrounded by a very beautiful view towards the reserve and the harbour.
The original brief was to upgrade the existing house, to open up their bedroom and living space towards the views where they are going to spend most of their time, and build the pre-existing DA swimming pool with a timber deck as an entertainment area.
One of our first approaches was to sort out the circulation throughout the house.
All structural works are done and the builder will be starting working on the finishes after new year.

Our recently completed project in Mosman which was shortlisted in the Mosman Design Award 2015.
The palette of natural materials is kept simple and warm with the use of sandstone, red iron bark, and copper to reference the site’s position adjacent to the reserve.
The builder (F.S. Hough P/L) worked with these beautiful materials with great care and expertise so much so that they received 2 awards in the Master Builders Awards 2015 that have recently been awarded; Award for contract houses $4-5million and Award for Best use of timber. www.fshough.com.au

This stair is has been an amazing experience to date and it just keeps getting better.
Using our 3D documentation package (ArchiCAD) we were able to test multiple designs for step heights, head heights and fine tolerances as well as walk Tim and Ellie through the project.
The existing space was tight and we needed to connect 3 floors so this stair had to fold and twist to work its way up the building – making the stair an Escher-like contemporary insertion into the heritage listed house. The structure is super thin which has saved on much needed head room and helps to the stair read as a ribbon that ripples it’s way up and down the house.
A lot of time and effort from all concerned has gone into the design detailing, structural engineering, shop drawings, fabrication, pre-finishing and now the installation. We are looking forward to seeing the next floor in a few days and then the timber lining.
