The young family came to us needing a total of 5 bedrooms on the first floor of an existing house. The existing house was a substantially modified Art Deco period house overlooking Sirius Cove, Mosman.
The owners wanted to extend up and down economically but very much in-keeping with the existing house. The bedroom pavilion occupied the air space above the family living space which originally had a skillion roof.
Voids were inserted to introduce natural light into the centre of the house and to help connect its 3 levels. The dingy basement rooms were altered to make a playroom / guest bed, and a TV den.

The shutters give rhythm to the facade and provide excellent sun control for the kids' bedrooms.
-
The northern wall and ad hoc windows to the family room were replaced with large sliding doors.

For this alts + adds project, the void and stair permit light to enter into the depths of the house from where it was previously excluded. It gives a sense of theatre to the 'everyday' garage / basement access stair.

-
This TV den was once a dingy storerooom.
-
Better use was made of the basement guest room by hiding the bed in the wall and freeing-up the room for the kid's play space.

-
The existing house had a wardrobe covering this desk window which had views to the Harbour bridge. The window could not be made higher but it is the perfect height when one is sitting at the desk or lying on the bed.
-
Extending the confines of the shower up and into the skylight shaft makes this modest size bathroom feel much larger.
-
The children's bedrooms have plenty of light which can be tempered by the external shutters.
-
This storeroom was modified to become the TV den
-
3 Bedrooms replaced the skillion roof. The clad walls and window were replaced with large sliding doors opening onto the children's play area.
