Bungalow Renewal

Location
Roseville
Year

2022

The original Federation bungalow had suffered from ad-hoc additions and small living spaces to the rear which were separated from the rear garden. These barnacles were stripped away and the charming original house was preserved and lovingly restored to enrich both its site and neighborhood. The connection between the old house and the new addition is punctuated by the double-height volume of the dining room which allows northern light deep into the house.

The project represents a transition in both form and time. The contemporary addition evolves from the traditional spaces and heritage detailing. It is an evolution from past to present and from street to garden.

The unlacquered brass handrail is starting to patina. The bend around the post requires one to take a moment to notice.

The house gradually steps down from the existing bungalow, through the dining  room and living room and to the garden beyond.
