General usage tips: Textpattern

For the most part, your most common activity in Textpattern will be adding new or modifying existing articles and imagery.

Making changes to Articles

The easiest way to change any article text is to click on the little hand that appears below the article on the public site (note: you’ll only see the little hand if you’re logged into TXP). The relevant article will open in the Content:Write tab, where you can make your changes. When you’re done, click Save, and check your work by viewing the page on the public website.

Alternatively, you can locate an article in TXP by:

  • Looking for it in the Content:Articles tab
note: you can filter / search / sort / recategorise / hide / delete any articles using this page.
  • Whilst in the Content:Write tab,
    • find your article in the Recent Articles panel
    • navigate to the next or previous article by clicking on the_Prev_ or Next links

Making changes to Images

While you can’t directly edit an image in TXP, you can replace it with another, or modify it’s caption, category etc. Click on the little hand next to the image on the public site and the image will open in a new window where you can make your changes. When you’re done, click Save.

Alternatively, you can locate an image in TXP by looking for it in the Content:Images tab
note: you can filter / search / sort / recategorise / hide / delete any images using this page.

Adding a new Article

Once you’re logged in, click on the Content:Write tab, and enter a Title and some text in the Body fields. The Section & Category menus determine where the article will display on the public site.

Click Publish and test your new article by viewing it on the public site.

Adding a new Image

Images need to be prepared on your Desktop before uploading into TXP:

  • in .jpeg .gif .png format
  • to a maximum pixel size of:
    • 1500px horizontally
    • 1000px vertically
note: this maximum size is suitable for your project imagery. It is preferred to use a smaller pixel size for non-project images (as everything is stored on the web server, smaller images = snappier response when working in the Content:Images tab).

Add images via the Article Image panel on your article’s Content:Write page – a window is displayed where you can select an image already uploaded into TXP, or you can upload a new image from your Desktop.

You can upload multiple images using the interface at the top of the Content:Images tab.

Formatting

For the most part the site is designed so that you don’t need to bother with formatting your text – but the flexibility is there should you need it, via Textile, the HTML-formatting engine built into TXP.

Whilst in the Content:Write page, see Textile help for an overview of your options, or see the Textile help site for a thorough overview.

Your website will already be using some Textile formatting – click on the article’s little hand to see an example of how it was done. Links to external websites? No problem. Links to other pages on the website? Peasy.

Publish options

Down at the bottom of the Content:Write tab you’ll find the More panel. Here you can set a custom publish date (as opposed the automatic one you get by default).

  • Set a publish date in the future and the article will only be published on that date.
  • Set an article expiry date
  • Change the date to alter where the article appears on the page
